Every rental that leaves our shop in Hill City goes out ready to ride: a fitted helmet, a bike sized and adjusted to you, and a short walkthrough of how the motor, the assist levels and the battery gauge behave on crushed limestone. We also make sure you leave with our phone number saved, because that number is the whole point of the roadside plan below. We sit right beside the George S. Mickelson Trail, so a rider who runs into trouble a few miles out isn't waiting on somebody driving in from Rapid City.<\/p>\n

What comes with the bike<\/p>\n

Helmet, water bottle space, and a bike set up for your height before you roll out the door. We check tire pressure on every bike between rentals, because pressure is the single biggest factor in how a fat-ish tire feels on the trail's packed gravel. You'll also get a plain-language rundown of the assist settings and what each one does to your range. Most riders overestimate how much assist they need on the Mickelson Trail. It's an old railroad grade, so the climbs are long and gentle rather than steep, and level one or two is usually plenty between Hill City and Mystic.<\/p>\n

How do we decide how far you should ride?<\/p>\n

Before you go, we talk through your plan and match it to what the battery will actually do that day. Temperature matters here. A cool October morning in the Black Hills pulls a little more out of a battery than a warm July afternoon. Rider weight, headwind, and how much you lean on the motor all change the number. If you tell us you want to see the fall color between Hill City and the Rochford stretch, we'll tell you honestly whether that's a comfortable out-and-back or whether Mystic is the smarter turn. We would rather send you out with a realistic plan than have you coast the last four miles on a dead battery.<\/p>\n

What happens if something goes wrong on the trail?<\/p>\n

Call. Flats happen on any trail, and the Mickelson is no exception \u2014 the surface is good but a sharp rock finds a tire now and then. Because our base is in town and the trail runs past it, we can get to most of the popular sections quickly. We'll bring what's needed to get you moving, or we'll bring you back and sort the bike out here. This is one of the practical reasons a lot of visitors choose a bike rental near the Mickelson Trail over hauling their own bikes across the country: the backup is local.<\/p>\n

Does this matter more for some riders?<\/p>\n

Yes. Electric bike rentals in South Dakota have opened this trail up to people who wrote off a long ride years ago. We see riders in their seventies and eighties doing twenty-plus miles and enjoying every bit of it, and we see grandparents keeping pace with grandkids for the first time in a decade. Those are exactly the riders who benefit most from the pre-ride check and the phone number, because the confidence to go a little farther comes from knowing someone will come get you if the day goes sideways.<\/p>\n

Staying the night<\/p>\n

Our lodging sits on the same property, a short walk from the trail, which makes a two-day plan simple. Ride north toward Deadwood one day, south toward Custer the next, and don't move the car in between. Fall is the season we'd point out first \u2014 the aspen and birch turn gold through late September and early October, the trail quiets down, and the light through the pines along the Mystic section is worth the trip on its own.<\/p>\n

One note: the state requires a daily or annual trail pass for riders twelve and older. Ask us when you book and we'll make sure you're squared away before you start pedaling.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
