Fall color in the northern Black Hills is not one date on a calendar \u2014 it moves. The aspen and birch stands on high ground above Rochford and Dumont usually turn first, the drainages along Castle Creek and Spring Creek hold their leaves a week or two longer, and the oak and cottonwood down around Hill City are often the last to go. If you want gold, plan for the last days of September through the first stretch of October, and be ready to shift your ride a few miles north or south depending on what the leaves are doing that week. We watch the trail daily from the shop, so a phone call before you drive out is worth more than any forecast.<\/p>\n

How do I know whether I'm early or late?<\/p>\n

Look at elevation and look at water. The trail climbs as it runs north out of Hill City toward Mystic, Rochford and the tunnels near Dumont, and the high country changes color first. If the aspens up there are already bare, ride south toward Oreville and Custer instead, where the season runs later. If the birch up north are still solid green in the third week of September, you're a bit early and the following weekend will likely be better. Cold nights are the trigger. A run of mornings in the twenties will turn a hillside in a matter of days.<\/p>\n

Where should I start, and which way should I ride?<\/p>\n

The Hill City trailhead is a good starting point because you can go either direction and get something worth seeing. North puts you into the old railroad grade, the rock cuts and the tunnels, with heavy aspen through the creek bottoms. South is more open meadow and pine, easier riding, good for a shorter loop out and back. For a one-day trip, most riders do 20 to 30 miles round trip and stop for photos more than they expect to. The grade never exceeds about four percent anywhere on the Mickelson Trail, which is why this works for such a wide range of riders.<\/p>\n

Is an electric bike better than a regular one this time of year?<\/p>\n

For most people in fall, yes. Days are shorter, the air is cold in the morning, and headwinds through the open sections take more out of you than they do in July. An e-bike lets you cover ground between color pockets without turning the day into a workout, and it means a group with different fitness levels can stay together. That last part matters for families and for older riders \u2014 we rent to plenty of people in their seventies who ride 25 miles and finish smiling. Do you have lodging right on the trail?<\/p>\n

We do. Staying trailside in Hill City means you can roll out of your unit and onto the path without loading a car, which is a real advantage in October when the best light is early. Combining lodging with Black Hills bike rentals in one booking also saves you a morning of logistics. Hill City sits close to Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and Spearfish Canyon, so a fall bike vacation in South Dakota can include a couple of drives without much backtracking.<\/p>\n

A note on booking<\/p>\n

Autumn fills differently than summer. The color window is narrow, weekends inside it get claimed months ahead, and both the bikes and the rooms go at the same time. If a particular weekend matters to you, secure it well before Labor Day.
