The main thing that sets the price of an e-bike rental in Hill City is time on the bike. A two or three hour spin down the Mickelson Trail and back costs less than keeping the bike overnight, and multi-day riders pay a lower average per day than someone grabbing a bike for one afternoon. Everything else \u2014 the pedal-assist bike itself, the helmet, a quick fitting and a walk-through of the controls \u2014 is folded into that rate rather than tacked on. Today's rates are right on our reservation form, and you'll see the full price before you book. If you also want a room, just ask and we'll put the room and the bikes on one bill.<\/p>\n

Why does the length of the rental change the number so much?<\/p>\n

Because the bike has to come back, get cleaned, get charged, and get checked before the next guest. A short rental and a three-day rental take roughly the same amount of that work, so the per-hour cost of a quick ride is naturally higher. If you're riding with us a few days, you come out ahead, which is why a lot of people who came for an afternoon come back the next morning for a longer stretch.<\/p>\n

What does the rate cover besides the bike?<\/p>\n

A charged battery, a helmet, and time with someone who will show you the throttle, the assist levels, and how to read the battery gauge before you leave the lot. That last part matters more than people expect. Most of our guests have never ridden pedal assist, and five minutes in the parking area saves a lot of guessing at Oreville. We will also talk through the grade you are about to ride, because the Mickelson Trail climbs gently but steadily in some directions and people are always surprised at how the return leg feels.<\/p>\n

Do I need a trail pass, and is that part of the price?<\/p>\n

The Mickelson Trail requires a daily or annual pass for adult riders, and that is a South Dakota state parks fee, not ours. Passes are sold at self-service stations at the trailheads, including the one right here in town. Ask us when you book and we will make sure you are not standing at the kiosk digging for cash when you would rather be riding.<\/p>\n

Is there a discount if I book lodging too?<\/p>\n

We are trailside in Hill City, so the bike and the bed are in the same place. When you put both together we put it all on one total instead of two separate bills, which usually works out better than booking a room in Rapid City and driving in. For fall riders especially, being able to roll out at 7 a.m. in late September, when the aspen are turning gold against the ponderosa, is worth more than whatever the math says.<\/p>\n

Does the season change what I pay?<\/p>\n

Some stretches of the year are busier than others. July and August are busy, the first two weeks of October bring the leaf riders, and shoulder weeks in May or late September are quieter. Weather here does not follow the calendar \u2014 we have had snow in May and 70 degrees in November \u2014 so if you are flexible on dates, tell us and we will point you at a stretch that is usually calmer.<\/p>\n

A note for older riders and mixed-ability groups<\/p>\n

Pedal assist is the reason a 78-year-old and a 12-year-old can ride the same fifteen miles together and both enjoy it. The rate is the same whichever assist level you use, so there is nothing to lose by dialing it up on the climb out of Hill City and saving your legs for the view.<\/p>\n
