Are e-bikes hard to ride if you’ve never used one?

Hi, This is one of the questions I hear most, usually from folks who are standing right next to a bike, a little unsure. So take a deep breath: no, e-bikes really aren’t hard to ride at all. If you can ride a regular bike, you can ride one of ours, and most people feel comfortable within the first few minutes.
**What is pedal assist and how does it work?**
Pedal assist just means the bike gives you a little push when you pedal. You still pedal like normal, but the motor helps out, so hills feel flatter and long rides feel shorter. There’s a little button that lets you dial in how much help you want. Level 1 is a gentle boost, and the higher levels give you more. That’s really all there is to it — once you’re rolling, you’ll forget it’s even there.
**How long does it take to get the hang of it?**
Honestly, about five minutes for most folks. Before you head out on the Mickelson Trail, we walk through everything in the parking lot so you can try it at your own pace. You’ll get a feel for the assist, the brakes, and how to shift. We won’t send you off until you feel steady and ready.
**Are e-bikes good for beginners and seniors?**
Yes, and this is honestly my favorite part. The pedal assist makes biking possible for people who thought their riding days were behind them. We rent to a lot of folks in their 70s and 80s who do a relaxed one-day trip on the Mickelson Trail and come back grinning. The trail itself is gentle, with a gradual grade and a crushed-limestone surface, so there are no steep climbs to worry about.
**The little tips I give everyone before they head out:**
– Start in a low assist level and work your way up as you get comfortable.
– Ease onto the brakes rather than grabbing them hard.
– Keep both hands on the bars when you press the assist button.
– Take it slow on the trailhead the first quarter mile, then relax and enjoy.
We’re right alongside the Mickelson Trail here in Hill City, so you can roll out the door and onto the trail. If you want to make a weekend of it, we also have trailside lodging so you can ride, rest, and ride again.
